100ml rule coming back at security

A new government directive comes into force on 9 June 2024, at 0001 hours, bringing back the 100ml rule for liquids, pastes, and gels until further notice.

The rule applies to regional airports that have the Next Generation Security Checkpoints (NGSC) with the new type of scanners and have removed the 100ml rule recently.

The airports are

  • Newcastle,
  • Leeds Bradford,
  • London City,
  • Aberdeen,
  • Southend,
  • Teesside airports

All airports were due to have the new scanners by 1 June 20245, but most major UK airports are unlikely to have finished installing them much before this time next year. The government is being very cagey as to why this is happening. Transport Secretary Mark Harper said,

“For most passengers actually the rules haven’t changed at all yet, and won’t therefore change tonight,” he told BBC Breakfast.

He said the reintroduction of restrictions was to allow “changes” to be made to the scanning equipment.

“It’s a temporary measure and we’ll set out when that can be reversed in due course,” he said.

Although the statement from the DfT says that it only affects the six regional airports, those airports with partial new scanners are also restricting liquids to 100ml. So much for progress!

British Airways has teamed up with Uber Boat by Thames Clippers to the airport with 25% off tickets and a complimentary drink on the Thames for those flying with BA Cityflyer, British Airways’ subsidiary airline based at London City Airport.

Uber Boat by Thames Clippers is London’s River Bus service, stopping at 24 piers across the capital between Putney Pier in the west and Barking Riverside in the east.

From Royal Wharf Pier it is a short DLR ride to London City.

With views of the Canary Wharf skyline and the River Thames, it’s an airport like no other and working with Uber Boat by Thames Clippers helps us to extend the London experience beyond the airport.”

British Airways customers travelling to or from London City Airport with flights on the same day can enjoy the 25% discount when booking in advance via www.ba.com/londoncity. As an added perk, they can also show their boarding pass at the onboard café bar to receive a complimentary hot drink.

Up to 50% Avios buy bonus

If you don’t want to wait for the next BA Avios buy bonus, Qatar has launched a maximum of 50% bonus for Avios. This is generally the highest bonus available over the last year. The offer is available until 11 June 2024.

The maximum you can buy is 250,000 +125,000 bonus for $5750. Obviously if you only have a card that charges for foreign currency transactions (usually around 3%), you need to factor that in against waiting for BA.

If you want them for your BA account, you will need to transfer them from your Qatar Airways Privilege Club account. Linking your BA and Qatar Airways accounts makes it very simple to transfer them into a British Airways Executive Club account.

The catch is that the bonus is staggered:

  • 4000+ Avios = 20% bonus
  • 16,000+ Avios = 40% bonus
  • 40,000+ Avios = 50% bonus

You can find the buy Avios page here.
