How To Get To Playa Lagun in Curacao
Playa Lagun is a beautiful beach located on the northwestern coast of Curaçao. It is quite a drive from the touristic center of Curacao, but it is well worth it.
Here’s how you can get there:
From Willemstad: Drive northwest on Weg naar Westpunt (the main road to the island’s west side).
Continue on this road for about 30 minutes, passing through towns like Sint Michiel and Barber. Once you reach the village of Lagun, take a left turn onto Lagunweg.
Follow the signs for Playa Lagun, and you’ll arrive at the beach in just a few minutes. You can park right at the beach.
From HATO: From Curaçao International Airport (HATO), head west on Weg naar Westpunt. This main road will lead you toward Lagun, similar to the route from Willemstad.
The journey from the airport to Lagun should take about 25 minutes. Keep an eye out for the signs directing you to Playa Lagun.
Make a left turn onto Lagunweg, and follow it to reach the beach.
Snorkeling at Playa Lagun
Playa Lagun is one of the best snorkeling beaches in Curacao. The biggest reason is, that Playa Lagun is frequently visited by sea turtles. We have seen them there many times – and it is always a great experience.
You can spot lots of beautiful marine life – including parrotfish, angelfish, and barracudas. Keep an eye out for the stunning sponges and coral formations too!
If you’re lucky, you might even see some more exotic creatures like moray eels or a manta ray gliding by. I suggest coming early in the day, for the best chance of seeing rare marine life.
The best snorkel spots can be found near the cliffs on both sides of the bay.
Diving at Playa Lagun
Another popular activity at Playa Lagun is diving. The beach is one of the best scuba diving spots in Curacao.
In the building on the right side of the beach is an awesome Scuba Dive Center. You can rent gear there, book guided dives, and take lessons.
Playa Lagun is a shore dive site, and you’ll need to have at least an Open Water experience level. The depth is 40 ft to 120 ft.
Where to Eat At Playa Lagun
If you are wondering where to eat in Playa Lagun, you are in the right spot. One of my all-time favorite restaurants in Curacao is located in Playa Lagun, and you can find it on the left side of the beach.
Simply walk up the staircase and you’ll find Bahia Lagun Restaurant. They serve the most delicious food on the island – and it is absolutely cheap as well.
From the restaurant, you have an awesome view of the beach. And the best part: they have lots of cute iguanas there that you can pet and feed.

Accommodation & Hotels at Playa Lagun Curacao
Playa Lagun is pretty far off the beaten path, so there are not a ton of hotels in the area. However, our most beloved resort with rental houses is located there.
The Lagoon Ocean Resort is located on the right side of the bay in Playa Lagun. From the charming little houses, you’ll have a stunning view of the bay, the ocean, and especially the sunset.
The resort has a pool and a BBQ area – it is the perfect place for a relaxed vacation. They even bring you breakfast to your doorstep. We stay in this resort every single time we travel to Curacao!
Is Playa Lagun a Good Place for Sunbathing?
Honestly, Playa Lagun is not a great place for sunbathing and relaxing. There are not a lot of beach chairs for rent, and there is barely any shade.
Unless you rent one of the awesome houses on the cliff, you’ll not be able to enjoy a relaxed beach day. The beach is usually bustling with a lot of activity: fisherman driving out their boats, divers getting in and out of the water, and other disturbances.
We tend to visit Playa Lagun either to rent a house, a short snorkel trip, or have some food at Bahia Lagun. However, we have never really enjoyed basking in the sun there for too long.
Is Playa Lagun for Free?
Yes, you can visit Playa Lagun for free. There are free parking spots, and you don’t have to pay anything to enjoy the beach.
You can rent some beach beds there for very little money. Other than that, you don’t have to plan for any expenses when visiting Playa Lagun.
Is Lagun Safe?
I would not rate Playa Lagun as a super safe place in Curacao. Yes, you can spend a nice day there without worrying too much. But I would not hang around there in the evenings – the area there is not the safest.
Make sure to watch your stuff on the beach, or lock it in your car when you go snorkeling.
We had a scary incident with a local there, he was trying to violently hurt one of the iguanas that live on the beach – and we had to step in. Apart from this incident, we haven’t had any issues though.
Playa Lagun – Honest Review
In my opinion, Lagun has one of the most beautiful scenery on the island. The dramatic cliffs on both sides make this place so special.
The water is crystal clear and you’ll be able to snorkel with sea turtles – which I absolutely love!
I don’t like that the actual beach area is so messy. The beach is not touristic and curated at all (which is good in a way) – but that makes it hard to spend a whole day there.
As mentioned before, we usually hop by there for a meal or a snorkel – or we rent a house there. But this is not one of the beaches where we go for relaxation.
We had some pretty scary interactions there with locals as well, so it is also not one of the safest places on the island.
However, the beauty of the beach and the ocean makes up for it – and we keep coming back.

To sum it up, Playa Lagun is one of my favorite places in Curacao. The beach looks amazing, with the cliffs on both sides – and you can regularly see sea turtles coming by.
The downside of this beach is, that it is not fully serviced. For that reason, we usually don’t hang out there all day.
One of the best things to do in Playa Lagun is renting a house in the Lagoon Ocean Resort. We stayed there many times, to escape the busy tourist part of Curacao.
As I mentioned, don’t hang out there at night by yourself, it is not located in the safest area of the island.
